Volunteer!

Volunteering is a great way to meet people, build skills, and support ISLAND. In some cases, volunteering also gets you into workshops and events for free or reduced rates. If you are interested in volunteering for any of the opportunities below, please contact Amanda Kik at amanda@artmeetsearth.org or 231-480-4515.

Cordwood Building
Gain cordwood building experience while helping to finish the sauna started at the recent workshop. The building is at the ISLAND property in Bellaire. Please contact us to get the schedule.

Cordwood masonry is an old building technique whereby walls are constructed of short logs (log-ends) laid up widthwise in the wall within a special mortar matrix. The wall derives excellent insulation and thermal mass characteristics from insulation sandwiched between the inner and outer mortar joints. Cordwood houses are low in cost, use indigenous materials and are easy and fun to build.

Canning Workshops

Come join in the fun of a community canning party. We need help with set up and clean up. Volunteers get a reduced rate for the workshop.
Please see the events page on our website for dates and locations of upcoming canning workshops.

Sunday Soup
Volunteer at Sunday Soup! We need servers, help with set up and clean up, and miscellaneous tasks. Volunteers enjoy free admission and dinner. The next Sunday Soup is August 21 at The Good Work Collective in Old Town Traverse City.

Sunday Soup is a community driven, micro-granting program to support the creation of new art. Artists apply; the best projects present. The community gathers and donate $5-$20 for a meal while enjoying presentations by the selected artists. After the presentations, folks drop their spoons into a voting bucket for their favorite project—the project with the most spoons takes home the door money.
