Two Documentaries by Chris Bedford

Amanda and I just came from the Bellaire Senior Center where we watched the short documentary What Will We Eat? and participated in a discussion about building our local food system. It's refreshing and exciting to see this conversation taking place in Antrim County - there's a healthy bit of this talk in Traverse City but not much here (where the farmers actually live). The film was less than half an hour but everyone stayed much longer to throw around ideas: value added food production, farm incubators (from commercial kitchens to web design), farm to schools, local currencies, capturing and keeping tourist dollars, etc. Pretty lively stuff for a random sleepy Thursday in Bellaire.

We hope that even more folks will come to the next event, held next Thursday, March 6th at 7 pm at the Bellaire Senior Center. We'll be watching Sioux City Sue (another documentary by Chris) and expanding the discussion. For local folks who care about building the local economy and/or the local organic food system, this is a great opportunity to see who else is out there and get your ideas heard.

These two events are sponsored by the MSU Cooperative Extension and the Antrim County Farmers Market. Oh, and in case you were concerned, the ISLAND event Your Green Home, on the same day, will be done with plenty of time to grab a bite to eat and make it over to the Senior Center. Both of these events are listed on our events page.

Hi Brad and Amanda, I am missing so much - these documentaries and Stephanie Mills to mention only a few things that seem to be scheduled either just before I arrive or just after I have to leave. I will be in MI the week of March 15 - through the following Fri. and it appears that nothing is scheduled for that week.

Ah well - the end of the school year is fast approaching and all I can do now is hope this house sells and my husband lands the job he is hoping for in TC.

On a lighter note - I am wondering how the cheese is doing? Have you cut into it yet?

We cut into the cheese, and it is crumbly and soft and pretty good. It's a little acidic, but is lovely in tacos and sandwiches.

Next--cheddar!
