Waking Up on the Best Day of the Year

I woke up first in the middle of the night, sleepless - I went and did the dishes.

Again, just around first light, realizing that the slow inexorable turn of the earth around the sun means that today begins winter, and that we're slowly coming around to face the sun fully again - I suddenly saw us, all, deep out in black space, slowing coming around the invisible bend toward perihelion. I had the feeling you get when you finally pull onto your home street after a long long drive.

And the good news - more daylight (5 seconds more tomorrow!), not to mention more solar gain on windows, greenhouses and panels.

Happy Solstice and Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays and have a wonderful winter!
